**The Bookstore on Winter Street**

She came in every Thursday at four romance stories.

Not for books, Eli thought. For the rain to stop, for the quiet.

This Thursday she came in shaking snow from her coat. "Do you have anything for someone who doesn't believe in love stories anymore?"

Eli smiled from behind the counter. "That's my best section."

He handed her a worn paperback. "Page 47. Read it here."

She read. He pretended to shelve books, watching her eyes soften.

"This is good," she said.

"You can keep it. Bring it back when you believe again."

She came back Tuesday. Not Thursday.

"I believed on page 89," she said, slightly out of breath.

"You skipped ahead."

"I couldn't wait."

He stepped closer. "What made you believe?"

She held up the book. On the margin, in his handwriting from years ago, he'd written: *one day someone will sit right there and make me want to write my own.*

"I think," she said quietly, "you just did."

Outside, the snow kept falling on Winter Street, but inside, their story had already started.
